When mobile payments were only in their infancy American Express realised the importance of developing this technology for their customers. Without the luxury of reference or best practice we developed the Mobile Wallet from the ground up. While NFC was a relatively new technology we wanted to make cardmembers’ experience as simple and intuitive as possible.
American Express wanted to roll out the application to its GNS partners (Global Network Services) so the design team made sure to create a flexible approach for co-branded solutions. Rewards, Loyalty Cards and Peer to Peer payments were proposed and advocated but weren’t part of this initial phase of design.
What resulted was a simple stylish solution that wouldn’t look out of place when paying with iPhone 6 today. It’s the inflated price of the coffee 4 years later that will make you frown.
